A 30 Day Challenge to See Why It's #BetterWithWindows8

Microsoft Canada

If you aren’t a follower of my social media streams you might have missed my big news. I have recently signed on to be a Windows Influencer! My first job as an influencer – to embrace the Windows 8 environment completely so that I can bring you cool apps, new releases and help you get the most out of your Windows devices. To make that possible Windows offered to send me one device for all of my needs. After talking with them in-depth about what technology I am currently using in my day-to-day life we decided that a Windows Surface Pro 2 loaded with Office 2013 would be my one device. To make using it easier they added in a Type Cover 2.

In the spirit of embracing Windows 8 completely I decided that a 30 day challenge was in order. For the next 30 days I am going to tuck away all of my other technology, excluding my phone, and only use the Surface Pro 2. I admit I was a bit skeptical about giving up all of my tech and replacing it with one device, but even after just a few days with the Surface Pro 2, I think will get along just fine. Instead of blogging and editing photos on my laptop, reading on my Kobo Glo, taking late night notes on my Note 8 and using my iPad for the kids and in the kitchen I will be using the new Surface Pro 2.

Surface Pro 2 (6 of 6)

Surface was designed to be the one device for everything in your life. Every Surface offers ports, Office compatibility, and Covers. Whatever you want to imagine, create, and share—Surface makes it possible to do it all. And more.

The Surface Pro 2 offers the convenience of a tablet, but with a robust operating system and speed that rivals if not exceeds my current laptop. With a next-gen Intel Core i5 processor it provides incredibly fast performance and usability. The Windows 8 interface was daunting at first, has become as easy to use as the Windows 7 interface. I love that a tablet runs all the Office 2013 programs I need for business. It is also capable of running Lightroom 5 which I use to edit my Raw camera files. Everything can then be seamlessly uploaded to OneDrive so it can be accessed and shared from the cloud, which frees up memory in my device. Each Surface Pro 2 comes with 200GB of free space in One Drive which is more than enough for all your photos and documents. Also included is a year of Skype. Another aspect of the Surface Pro 2 that I love is the wide range of apps that are available. While there isn’t as large a catalogue of apps as the android and apple environments, Windows 8 does offer alternatives that are as good as if not better than some of your favourite apps. In addition to the usual social media applications Windows 8 offers:

Surface Pro 2 (1 of 6)

  • Games like Flow, Floppy Bird, Frozen Free Fall and Minion Rush
  • Music apps like Slacker Radio, Xbox Music and Songza
  • Flipboard to stay on top of your social streams and favourite blogs.
  • Kobe, Kindle and Next Issue to help you keep on top of your reading
  • Netflix and the Xbox One Smartglass to streamline your video viewing experience.
  • Cocktail Flo and Bing Food and drink for all my recipe and drink recipes.
  • Fresh Paint for creating art.

Stay tuned to my social networks and follow @WindowsCanada the #BetterWithWindows8 hashtag as I share my thoughts on the device in real-time. Each week on the blog I will also be sharing my favourite apps and how I am using the Surface Pro 2 in my daily life. One of the cool things I have already discovered is that you can use a spilt screen. This is perfect for taking notes while Skyping, or for doing research while blogging.

Have you tried Windows 8 or the Microsoft Surface?

  9. First off – love the pink keyboard, and the Surface looks great on your new desk 🙂

I switched to Windows 8 when I got my new laptop in the fall, so now I use a Windows 8 phone and laptop. It did take a little getting used to, but I love it now. And I’m finding that more apps that I was missing, like Instagram, are being developed. I’m kind of kicking myself for not waiting for a Surface. I’ll be following along to see how you find it! Maybe that will be my next upgrade.

  10. LOVE that pink keyboard!  Hubby is ALL OVER Windows 8! He is loving his tablet that has Windows 8. He is convinced we should buy a new computer with Windows 8 on it for me so that we are a Windows 8 family!  It syncs really nicely between devices we have found.

  11. I can’t wait to see what you do with the Surface. I was all for getting my son one for university, but we weren’t sure if it could do everything a computer can. Looking forward to the results of your challenge.

  12. BusyMomofTwins1  So far I am loving it. It functions like a laptop and a tablet. The best of both worlds. Thanks for stopping by.

  13. RossanaWyatt  I’m looking forward to wrapping everything up. Each day I learn a new trick to help maximize workflow.

  14. MultiTestingMom  I want to update all of our computers to windows 8 now too. It’s so easy to use. I learned today that even your tabs and start screen layouts sync between devices. Amazing.

  15. Mom2Michael  Yes I am happy to see that more of the mainstream apps are getting added to Windows. Do you have any favourite apps?

  16. AMotherhoodExperience  I especially like that I can give my kids their own setting and lock them out of mine! No more accidentally deleted apps or work.

  17. canadianmomeh  I hope you get the chance to give one a spin. I am really enjoying it so far. Thanks for stopping by!

  18. Brandy MyUnwrittenLife  That’s cool that you are already using the Windows 8 environment. Is your laptop a touchscreen?

  19. nugglemama Sadly it is not a touchscreen. I would love to have one that was! Especially the Surface. I knew I wanted one before I got to test one briefly at Blissdom but feel even more in love when I got my hands on it. It would be so easy to blog or work from anywhere with it.

  20. I love that hot pink keyboard. Fantastic! This would be a great device for my kids. Thanks. I like the portability of that.
