There are not many products that come through my door that get my hubby excited. The Hamilton Beach Food Dehydrator however already has him excitedly planning to “Jerky All The Meat”. While his thoughts turn to all the meat he can dehydrate my first thoughts went straight to making the kids “all the snacks”.
It can be hard to keep my bottomless pits content. While the occasional bowl of crackers or chips are ok I’d rather fuel their bodies with whole food. That’s why I’m loving the new Hamilton Beach Food Dehydrator. I admit I sat and stared at it for a few days as I worked through what I was going to dehydrate first. I thought about all the fruits, like bananas, berries and apples I could add into the kids trail mix, the herbs I could dry, and the jerky I could make. In the end I decided to try a little bit of everything fruity and dehydrated apples, bananas and made my very own fruit leather.
That’s the lovely thing about the Hamilton Beach Food Dehydrator, it does double, even triple duty. While my apples and bananas were dehydrating I tried my hand at fruit leather using frozen fruits I had on hand. I didn’t even use a recipe, just tossed some strawberries, blueberries and a little lemon into my food processor and pureed then spread it evenly over the top tray.
The Hamilton Beach Food Dehydrator is perfect for drying fruits, vegetables, herbs, jerky, and more without additives or preservatives and includes:
- 5 stackable drying trays
- 1 fine-mesh sheet for drying small food like herbs
- 1 solid sheet for making fruit rolls
- 48 hour timer with auto shutoff
- Adjustable digital thermostat
- Clear lid lets you easily check on food
- Continuous airflow provides even drying and eliminates the need to rotate trays
- Powerful 500 watts
- Digital thermostat lets you adjust drying temperature (40-70° C/100-160° F)
It’s so easy to use straight out of the box too. Just wash the trays in warm soapy water, or toss them in the dishwasher. Then you can line the trays with whatever your heart desires, set the temp and timer and walk away while the unit does all the work. If after the recommended time your food isn’t dehydrated enough simply set the timer for a little longer. If things look ready sooner, pause the dehydrator and try a piece and adjust the temp and time as needed. I found the recommendations prefect for the apples, but the banana chips I needed to dry a little longer, likely because I cut them too thick.
The kids are already requesting more apples and planning new blends for the fruit leather, and I can’t wait to try my hand at making deer meat jerky. Hopefully I get a chance this year.
