Change in routine can be difficult for little ones, especially around the holidays when there is added sugar, less sleep, more excitement and presents. Add onto that kids picking up on the stress that adults are feeling and you have a recipe guaranteed to end in illness or a meltdown. Below are my tips for staying sane over the holidays.

Breathe – Tempers are shorter, kids are on edge and all too often things boil over. When you start feeling like you have had enough, walk away and take a few deep breaths. This works even better if you can sneak away for a 5 or 10 minutes – lock yourself in a bathroom if you have to. Getting outside to literally cool off helps too.

Stick to Routines (as much as possible) – I got to be known as the resident party pooper because I always left the party early so my kids wouldn’t get too far off schedule. My kids and I were always happier when everyone got a good night sleep, especially since they never slept in.

Bring the Comforts of Home – If you can’t sneak out of the party early bring a few items from home to help the kids feel comfortable. A favourite book or blanket and 5 minutes of snuggle time is often enough to recharge little ones so they are good to go for a little longer.

  1. I agree that sticking to normal routines is really important over the holidays. It is especially helpful to get them back into routine when school starts back up. Happy New Year!
