Tummy aches in children are par for the course. When you are dealing with infants they can be caused by colic, an issue with formula or perhaps a reaction to something you ate before nursing. Figuring out that it is a tummy ache and not something else can be a guessing game with wee ones, unfortunately it doesn’t get any easier as children get older.
Tummy aches in older kids can have roots in just about anything from what they ate, to anxiety, and sometimes more severe issues such as appendicitis. I take each complaint on a case by case basis, and use my judgement of the symptoms to determine if it’s something I can treat at home (almost always the case) or take my concerns and sick child to the clinic. For example: High fever combined with tenderness is a do not pass go and head straight to the doctor, but a sore tummy before school with no other symptoms likely has its roots in something less sinister.
For cases of a sore tummy we always ask a few questions:
- Are you hungry? Have a snack.
- Are you thirsty? Have a glass of water.
- Have you had a poop recently?
- What was that last thing you ate?
- I also take into account how well/how much sleep they have gotten the night before and are there any big events coming up at school.
In most cases a small snack and a glass of water take care of things, but when that doesn’t work we move to our second line of treatments; Digestion+Appetite for kids homeopathic drops from Orange Naturals. This combination of time-tested herbs that our grandmothers wisely knew and loved works to calm sore tummies thanks to therapeutic doses of condition specific herbs like caraway, chamomile and peppermint.
Caraway has been used in traditional herbal medicine to help stimulate the appetite and relieve digestive spasms. Chamomile helps to calm and soothe any inflammatory conditions of the gastrointestinal tract, and peppermint is well known as a digestive aid that can help relieve flatulent dyspepsia (indigestion).
The secondary benefit of the drops is that I’ve noticed it also has a placebo effect for those times when a tummy ache is more of a case of nerves. The stress of a new environment, school and routine has been especially hard on my youngest and has been showing itself in more tummy aches than usual. We both find relief in knowing that there is something I can do to help her feel better when she isn’t really sure what’s bothering her.
