Recently my family and I headed out into the bitter cold to discover a gem in the heart of Alberta. Nestled along the Red Deer River, just outside of the town of Red Deer, lays Canyon Ski Resort. Known for having the longest, non-mountain, runs they have come up with a great way to encourage families to get out and have a little fun together on Sundays.
Every Sunday, with the purchase of a Full Day Family Pass, get free ski lessons for the whole family. My suggestion, use it for the kids to brush up their skills with a qualified instructor while you enjoy an hour of kids free skiing.
While the kids are busy with lessons take the chairlift up to the top of the runs and take a minute to enjoy the beauty that surrounds you in this winter wonderland.
Once at the top you can also plan your descent. Do you want to play it safe and stick to one of the blue runs, or take a chance with something a little more challenging? As hubby and I are just a little past the beginner stage we played it safe and stuck to the easier runs.
Visit snowseekers.ca to find out what the kids were up to while Hubby and I skied.
When you and the kids are plum worn out from all that fresh air, take some time to put your feet up by the fire, grab some grub, and warm up a bit before heading back outside.
Next time I will plan an overnight in the city so I can soak up a little more of the apres-ski vibe. The lounge was so warm and inviting.
After lessons and lunch we headed out for a few more runs with the kids where they showed us how much they learned from their instructor Harry. They even showed off a little by tackling one of the longer runs with my husband and I by their sides.
There are many hidden gems in Alberta, I’m so very glad that we discovered such a great one in Canyon Ski Resort. Book some quality family time on a Sunday, take advantage of free lessons, and find fun on the prairies.
