There once was a time that I wouldn’t think of setting down an oily and balsamic vinegar coated spoon on my precious granite counter tops. After many years of lusting for granite, I finally have a beautiful counter, with gorgeous purple veins running through it. The only issue I had was that I was never sure what the best way to care for a granite countertop was, so I simply kept what I could off it, wiped down anything that could stain as soon as possible and prayed that the countertop wouldn’t stain.
Wouldn’t you know it, just a couple of months after moving into my new house, my coffee maker leaked and I didn’t catch it right away. I am now left with a lovely area of counter that has a distinctively darker hue than the rest. Perhaps if I had been using Granite Gold® back then my counters would still be as pristine as the day I moved in.
The third-generation stone experts who cut their teeth in the family stone business – importing, manufacturing, installation and restoration – set out to develop a solution to care for natural stone surfaces that was easy for a home owner to use. The result? Granite Gold® brand stone-care products – a top-selling consumer brand sold in Canadian Tire, Bed Bath & Beyond Canada, U.S. grocery, mass merchant, hardware and specialty channels, and overseas, as well as online at www.GraniteGold.ca.
Included in their product line are products for cleaning, sealing and polishing your granite counter tops that will not only care for your counter tops, but protect them from damage, all while being:
- No phosphates or ammonia
- Safe on food preparation surfaces
- pH balanced
To care for your natural stone surfaces the experts at Granite Gold® suggest three simple tips: Clean, Polish, Seal
Clean often. Even if your surface appears clean, the safest bet is to clean it daily and after food prep. Avoid common cleaners and abrasives on stone surfaces. They can break down the protective seal leading to costly repairs or damage severe enough to require replacement.
Granite Gold® Daily Cleaner offers a deep clean that is safe on granite, marble, travertine and all other natural-stone and quartz surfaces. It quickly removes all types of spills and soiling, leaving behind only a fresh citrus scent. I love using this spray to clean my counters and use it daily. I feel good that my counters are getting a thorough cleaning without the damage caused by traditional cleaners.
Seal frequently. You can’t over seal stone surfaces. The experts recommend testing regularly to determine if it’s time to reseal. You can do that by pouring water in a puddle about 3 inches in diameter, on the surface and let it sit for 30 minutes. Be sure to do this in a few locations, since the integrity of the seal could vary from one area to another. If the water beads, then the stone remains sealed. However, if the stone is penetrated – look for a dark mark or ring created by the water – it is time to reseal.
Granite Gold® Sealer creates a barrier to protect natural stone. The water based formula, with regular use, maintains maximum surface protection against staining, etching and soiling. I used it three times on my counter and definitely saw a difference when doing the water beading test.
Polish regularly. Polishing stone provides two great benefits. It brings out your stone’s natural beauty and reinforces the protective seal – providing ongoing protection against water spots, soap scum (in tubs and showers) and fingerprints. The polish is not recommended for floors because while you want shiny counters, you do not want a skating rink for a floor.
Using Granite Gold® Polish is a little bigger job than the daily clean as it requires removing everything off the counter surface. Other than that, the process is easy and painless and boy, do my counters “shine like the top of the Chrysler building”.
